Water Damage at Home: What Insurance Usually Covers (and What to Do First)

Reading time: ~6 minutes

Water damage is one of the most common home insurance situations. The first few hours matter: stop the source, prevent further damage, and document everything.

Common sources of water damage

What to do immediately

  1. Stop the source (shut off water supply if safe).
  2. Prevent further damage (move items, towels, fans, dehumidifier if safe).
  3. Document: photos/video of the source, affected rooms, damaged items.
  4. Keep receipts for emergency mitigation and purchases.
  5. Contact your broker to review coverage and next steps.

Third-party liability (when someone else caused it)

If a contractor, neighbor, or service provider caused the damage, there may be third-party liability. Good documentation helps if recovery is pursued later.
