Driving for Uber, DoorDash or Instacart? Make sure your insurance knows.
Ontario’s standard auto policy doesn’t cover carrying paying passengers, and using your car for deliveries is a change your insurer needs to know about. Some apps provide coverage while you’re working, but it has limits. Frank explains your options so a claim isn’t denied.

What app drivers should know
Paying passengers aren’t covered by default
The standard Ontario auto policy excludes carrying paying passengers unless you have the right coverage, such as a ride-sharing policy or endorsement.
App coverage has limits
Some platforms have FSRA-approved policies that apply only while the app is on. When the app is off, your personal policy applies. Not every delivery app has one.
Your insurer needs to know
Using your car for work your insurer doesn’t know about can lead to a denied claim or a cancelled policy.

Common questions
Isn’t the app’s insurance enough?
It depends on the platform and when something happens. App coverage generally applies only while the app is on, and your personal policy covers the rest.
I only deliver a few hours a week. Do I need to tell my insurer?
Yes. Even part-time use is a change your insurer should know about.
Will it cost more?
It may, depending on the insurer and how much you drive for work. Frank compares options so you’re properly covered.
Can we talk in French?
Yes. Frank works in English or French.
